The Breach is hiring a Director of Operations

The Breach is an independent media outlet producing critical journalism to help map a just, viable future. Launched in May, 2021, we provide a platform for voices you won’t often find in the establishment media and investigations, analysis and video content about the crises of racism, inequality, colonialism, and climate breakdown.

We’re looking for a Director of Operations who would be excited to join a progressive, fun team at The Breach and help us grow during a critical early phase of our member-funded media organization’s life.

You will work closely with our team, shaping day-to-day processes and leading improvements in The Breach’s organizational practices and team culture, overseeing H.R., and developing our business and fundraising strategies.

This is a full-time permanent position. The salary will be between $55,000 and $60,000 annually, depending on experience, and includes health and dental insurance, three weeks paid vacation and holiday office closure.

The ideal candidate will have more than two years of experience in management or leadership role in a community organization, or equivalent. They will have excellent organizational skills, and practical experience in fundraising and H.R.

The position is ideally based in Montreal, but we will consider candidates willing to work remotely from anywhere and travel periodically.

The responsibilities of this role include:

  • Work closely with the Publisher, Managing Editor and Financial Coordinator in the day-to-day financial and operational management
  • Contribute to building a healthy work culture that promotes mutual support, respect, and accountability  
  • Coordinate business development strategy and activities
  • Develop and implement organizational and H.R. policies
  • Lead organization-wide planning processes; facilitate team meetings, debriefs, and retreats; track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Coordinate hiring, set performance objectives, onboard and offboard staff
  • Collaborate with the team on executing fundraising strategies, membership recruitment drives, and grant writing
  • Event planning and cultivating partnerships on behalf of The Breach


  • Experience with H.R. management
  • Experience with fundraising and grant-writing
  • Experience with financial management 
  • Leadership skills, initiative and strong work ethic
  • Broad alignment with The Breach’s political commitments and journalistic approach
  • Possession of strong emotional intelligence

Some attributes that are not essential, but desirable:

  • Some ability in French
  • Familiarity with independent media in Canada
