About the Position:
We’re looking for a Fundraising and Operations Director who would be excited to join a progressive, fun team at The Breach and help us grow during a critical early phase of our audience-funded media organization’s life.
You will work alongside several team members in co-leading improvements in The Breach’s organizational practices and team culture, overseeing H.R., and doing fundraising. The ideal candidate will have experience in leadership roles in a community organization, non-profit, progressive group, or equivalent. They will have excellent organizational skills, and practical experience in fundraising and human resources. We expect the candidate will grow into the role, and we would provide extensive training to level up their skills. The position will involve approximately 70% fundraising tasks and 30% operational tasks as outlined below:
Fundraising ( 70%): A key part of this role will be supporting the further development and execution of the organization’s fundraising strategy, with the aim of growing and diversifying revenue and contributing to our overall growth. Fundraising work at The Breach is shared and supported by several team members. Tasks will include:
- Alongside the publisher and managing editor, co-lead the fundraising strategy and activities including but not limited to reader donor growth development, grant writing, and relationship building with funders
- Identification and pursuit of funding opportunities with unions, foundations, and philanthropic giving
- Support the creation of high quality fundraising and marketing materials
- Analysis and improvement of donor management processes and donor comms, including the implementation and utilization of a CRM system
- Supporting the planning and execution of targeted and general campaigns to increase reader sustainer donations
- Donor, partner and grant management, communications and reporting
Operations (30%): In the past two years, The Breach has grown its income, expenditures and the size of its team. A central part of the role will be to implement and manage operational processes to encourage continued sustainable growth. Working closely with the Managing Editor, Coordinating Editor and Publisher, this role will be responsible for:
- Implementation and standardization of HR processes to make operations more efficient and aligned with strategic objectives
- Contribute to building a healthy work culture that promotes mutual support, respect, accountability, and fun
- Support of strategic planning, and management, monitoring and evaluation of the organization’s roadmap
- Management of the links between editorial, fundraising, marketing and finance departments to ensure good internal communication and cohesion between all areas of the organization
Desired Skills, Characteristics, and Experience
- Experience in fundraising or human resources
- High level of organization
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills in English
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines
- Eagerness to work collaboratively in a team-oriented, and value-driven environment
- Demonstrated experience in stakeholder management or relationship building with donors or funders
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills to analyze data and understand its relationship to the overall fundraising objectives and ability to provide a written assessment
- Familiarity with independent media in Canada
- Broad alignment with The Breach’s political values and perspective and journalistic approach
Compensation
This is a full time salaried position with a base salary between $60,000 – $65,000 commensurate with skills and experience. Our benefits package includes health, dental, vision, life/disability insurance, 4-week paid vacation and 10 paid sick days. The position is ideally based in Toronto or Montreal, but we will consider candidates willing to work remotely from anywhere and travel periodically.
