Journalist and Breach contributor, Linda McQuaig discusses the importance of independent and courageous journalism, and the very real consequences of a Canada without it.

Journalism is “about getting to the bottom of things…unveiling who has power and what they’re doing with that power”. Mainstream Canadian media is no longer capable of this work. They reflect the views not of the average Canadian, but rather their owners, some of the most powerful corporations in the country.

We need courageous journalism. Journalism not beholden to or afraid of corporate Canada.

Consider becoming a member of The Breach to support this kind of work.

The kind of journalism you appreciate
After working in Canadian media for nearly eight years, I’ve come to realize that “objectivity” is often a code word for passive, uncritical reporting. I’m proud of our honest journalism. Instead of feigning objectivity, we’re open about our progressive values while maintaining rigorous standards. If that sounds like the kind of journalism you appreciate, consider becoming a monthly sustainer. You'll help us deliver transformative journalism that’s accessible to everyone. —Emma Paling, coordinating editor, The Breach
