Donald Trump: This is a magnificent victory for the American people.

With Donald Trump in the White House, here’s what Canadians should prepare for.

  1. Trump will push Canada to spend way more on militarism

Amy Goodman: The Trump administration is pushing NATO countries to increase military spending, often to the benefit of weapons manufacturers like Boeing.

Trump: If they’re not going to pay, we’re not going to protect.

To meet that target, Canada would need to double their military spending.

Anchor: That’s expected to amount to $41 billion this year.

 2. Trump will empower fossil fuel interests in Canada

Trump: I will end Kamala’s war on American energy, and we will drill, baby, drill. We’re going to drill, baby, drill.

Anchor: Donald Trump reported looking to tap oil executives to contribute $1 billion to his re-election campaign.

Last time Trump was in power, the Trudeau government silently cheered.

“The swearing in of a new administration in the United States that recognizes the strategic importance of Canada’s role in North American energy security is, so far, positive news for the Canadian energy sector with regard to a potential increase in energy trade.”

3. The business lobby will demand Canada copy Trump’s corporate tax cuts

Anchor: He’s promised to cut the corporate tax rate in America to 15 per cent from 21 per cent.

Last time Trump did this, Canada’s business lobby asked for similar treatment.

Goodman: The White House has outlined a plan to give the nation’s millionaires and billionaires a massive tax break.

“Our government urgently needs to … significantly cut the cost of doing business in Canada”

4. Anti-immigrant hate will force more people to Canada’s doorstep

Trump: I will launch the largest deportation program in American history.

Searches for “how to move to Canada” and other such terms spiked by more than 5,000% in the day after Trump’s election.

5. Anti-trans politics will get a boost

Trump: The transgender insanity has taken over.

Ad: Kamala’s for they/them. President Trump is for you.

Watch for Canadian politicians to double down on transphobia.

Anchor: Pierre Poilievre is facing criticism for comments he made recently accusing the Prime Minister of seeking to impose his “radical gender ideology” on kids and schools.
